The IC track in India finally has compensation parity at the staff level — but the career ceiling is real.

For most of Indian tech history, the only way up was management. That changed when staff engineer comp at the top Indian product companies crossed ₹70 LPA, matching engineering managers. We finally have a real IC track. The catch: ceiling. Principal engineer roles in India are still rare and compensation tops out around ₹1.2Cr for non-FAANG. Engineering directors at the same companies cross ₹1.8Cr. If your goal is maximum lifetime earnings, management still wins. If your goal is doing the work you love without people-managing, the IC track is finally viable.

The budget breakdown is really helpful. Was planning ₹1L for 2 but looks like we need to revise up.
